Although there are more Canadian films to come out, Denis Villeneuve's Incendies will represent Canada in the category of Best Foreign Language Film at the 83th Oscars, which will be held in Hollywood on February 27, 2011. Moreover, Incendies has been in Quebec's theatres since September 17 after it had been presented at the Toronto and Venice International Film Festival.
The film introduces us to Simon (Maxim Gaudette) and Jeanne (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin) Marwal, who are both twins. After Jean Lebel (Rémy Girard) had read their mother's (Lubna Azabal) will, he gives to the twin two envelopes. One is for a dad they thought dead during the Lebanese Civilian War and another one for a brother they've never heard of. What begins for the twins is a personal investigation and a trip to Lebanon. As they'll gather informations, these twins will gradually discover who their mother really was, how the two twins were born and above all, why their mom had always remained silent on the day she was hospitalized.
