Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

Although Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is not, by any stretch, the best instalment of the POTC series, it remains a decent film for entertainment. In fact, this is the case for two reasons. The first one being obviously its action scenes and the second one, the enthusiasm of the cast.

The second film left us when Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) was dead and when Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) was brought back from the dead by Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris). In order to bring Jack back, Barbossa, Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann assemble a rag team and strike a deal with captain Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat). Together they plan to fight Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and Lord Cutler Beckett (Tom Hollander). However, some of the "good guys" are ready to individually make deals with Beckett in order to be free and fulfil an objective of their own.

Although the action scenes are not as imaginative as those from the first and second instalments, they're always a pleasure to watch. As we advance in the storyline, we get to see rather good sword fights (the first scene in Singapore is the best one). However, the best parts of the action sequences are definitely the scenes in which Jack Sparrow pulls out a trick to get from one ship to another when they're next to each other.

Other than that, if you thought that the plot twists in the second film are a tad mindless, wait until you see this film. Because of all the betrayals and even the deals that are sealed between the "good guys" and the villains, POTC 3 looks like a laughable soap opera that will inevitably have a happy ending. In the end, the only thing that will probably matter the leading characters will still be united against their common enemies regardless of the betrayals.

Awwww, isn't that cute?

Finally, there's not much to the story of this film and I hardly see what can be done with a fourth film in the POTC franchise. However, this third film is not entirely bad since the lively performance by Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Keira Knightley makes this action flick easier to digest.
